Baseball is played between two teams of nine players each. The offensive team scores run by hitting the ball thrown by the pitcher and running around a series of bases. The defensive team tries to prevent the offensive team from scoring. The team that scores the most runs after nine innings wins the game.

The modern baseball game evolved from earlier bat-and-ball games and took its current form in the mid-19th century in the United States. While Alexander Cartwright is credited with establishing the basic rules of baseball, its exact origins are still debated.

The longest home run recorded in baseball is disputed. Still, the current recognized record is held by Joey Meyer, who hit a home run that traveled 582 feet (177.1 meters) while playing for the minor league Denver Zephyrs in 1987. However, there have been other legendary home runs, such as Babe Ruth's estimated 575-foot (175.3-meter) home run in 1921 and Mickey Mantle's 565-foot (172-meter) home run in 1953.
